About Us - A Little Background

Hi All and welcome to the Marquis Engineering company blog.

Here I will discuss topics ranging from general technology and related developments, engineering concepts, technical philosophy, team and project management, and other topics related to my business.

But you should probably have some background to understand where I'm coming from and what has colored my perspective and guided my opinions.

So, I was born and raised in the USA. I went to school in Massachusetts and started my winding path in Northern Vermont. While in the USA, I worked in New Hampshire, Virginia, and Washington state. But now, I live and work in Perth, Western Australia. (Yes, while they have some great similarities, there are a LOT of differences.)

I was raised in residential construction in New England in the US (not to be confused with the city in Australia), and have worked in industrial construction, submarines, aerospace (military and commercial), R&D and product development, mining, energy, and consulting. Yes, I can be a jack of all trades, but I can also dive deeply into the details and master these areas (well, at least get very good at them).

With these diverse experiences, with wildly diverse colleagues to collaborators, I have seen a LOT of different approaches, perspectives, and technical philosophies. The result...a critical analysis ability second (I believe) to very few.

My first university degree in Mechanical Engineering was fairly easy for me to attain simply because it's natural for me to think in that way. The challenge has come when I must interface and work with other engineers, service providers administrators, fabricators and implementors to get things done. In my more than 25 years in the workforce, that experience has certainly challenges my basic knowledge, my philosophy and my approaches. It's been very good! I highly recommend it.

I've had the privilege of working on projects for IBM in Vermont, Lockheed Martin in Virginia, Boeing and NOAA in Seattle, Mitsubishi in Oklahoma, Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton in Perth, Western Australia. I've designed and helped build and modify piping and HVAC systems, nuclear submarines, military and commercial airplanes, laser and pneumatic sensor systems, steam engines and power stations, mining systems, sailboats, alternative energy systems and emission mitigation systems.

I've been a grunt, framer, roofer and carpenter, mechanical designer and engineer, control systems engineer and simulation tech, tester and researcher, draftsman, project manager and planner, studies developer and editor, engineering manager, entrepreneur, web builder, (now) blogger, and home body (not always by choice).

It's been a wild ride, but I'm always ready for more. So, if you have any questions or a technical, project or management problem you need help with, contact me. If I can't help, I probably know someone that can.

The opinions here are my own and are certainly not textbook or universal, but I will do my best to express them to be a universal as I can.

Thanks and, again, welcome.
